The purple tea is a new tea variety grown in selected high-altitude areas of Kenya’s Highlands. The tea leaves naturally purple or slightly red in colour compared to the green leaves for the normal black or green teas. This extraordinary, rare and most fascinating tea is named after its purple and red pigments containing a chemical called Anthocyanin, similarly found in purple grapes, red berries, raspberries and blue berries.
Tests by the Kenya Tea Research Institute have shown that the Kenya purple tea has a much higher level of antioxidants and minerals than those of green tea and black tea combined. The Anthocyanin compound in the tea is associated with fighting free radicals in the body that cause a range of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, blood pressure, gout, colds and flu. Anthocyanin is known to fight chronic and degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, heart disease, inflammation, depression, hypertension and can be helpful towards weight loss

When brewed over 3-5 minutes, the tea produces full flavours and aroma with a delicate golden and light purple or reddish colours. The tea gives you an experience of a refreshing herbal drink that can be enjoyed hot or cold. You may add just a hint of lemon to release more of the purple colours. Do not add milk.
